You use your toothbrush so often, sometimes it’s easy to take it for granted. But if you take care of your toothbrush, it will be able to take care of you!

Toothbrushes only last for about 3-4 months, even if they look fine. Bacteria can grow on toothbrushes, and after 3-4 months of use they need to be replaced–sooner if the bristles look frayed or worn. Take the opportunity to treat yourself! There are a number of colors and styles available, and it’ll feel great to be able to take care of your teeth better.

When storing your toothbrush, never put it in a closed space. Open air discourages bacterial growth, and that is great for your toothbrush. If you must store it in a closed space, say in a zip-top bag for traveling purposes, be sure to air it out as often as possible.

Also, don’t store your toothbrush around other toothbrushes, as that can lead to cross-contamination. If you need to store it with other toothbrushes, make sure the heads don’t touch. Cross-contamination can spread bacteria that are harmful for your mouth.

On that note: never, EVER use your toothbrush for anything other than brushing your own teeth. Sharing toothbrushes can spread bacteria, disease, and infection and is very dangerous to your oral health.

Lastly, be sure to support your toothbrushing efforts with regular dental appointments. This allows for professional cleaning, which is a great help to keeping your smile bright and healthy. It also allows for your dentist to catch problems early. If you are in the Corvallis, Oregon area, be sure to call College Hill Dental Group at 541-753-8365.
